Don’t hate on Joann! I LOVE her and also Goldy so much lolol. Being a President is hard work, and her pay raise reflects that. I doubt you could do what she does. And the workers that you’re referencing don’t do nearly as much as her either, so why do you think a wage raise is so crucial? Not to mention it’s bad for the economy…

How could you even say that? Without our University workers, this University would fall apart. The Teamsters 320, the service workers of the U, are the ones who keep our campus buildings clean and feed students that eat at the dining halls — they even take care of research animals! We barely avoided a strike from them, and that was only because the regents realized that their asses would be grass if the Teamsters actually did strike. Really, it shouldn’t have taken the potential of a campus-doomsday for the Teamsters to be paid a fair wage. The announcement of Gabel’s pay raise was a huge slap in the face for the people that constituted the backbone of this school back when University workers were still fighting for a mere fifteen dollar wage MINIMUM.

I mean, the regents were nice enough to reach an agreement, so why are people still complaining about things? You got what you wanted!

Like I said, Gabel’s pay raise was disrespectful in light of all the work done by those who keep the University running, especially those who worked through the pandemic. Not to mention the transitions that faculty had to make in order to continue to ensure high-quality education to students during the height of the pandemic. Did you know that professors at the U are paid 5% less on average than the faculty at comparable institutions, such as other Big 10 schools? All of this hard work and dedication from the U’s faculty and on-campus workers; yet, the one who gets the biggest pay raise (and most praise for handling the pandemic) is the woman who just signs and sends out emails. Obviously, there were never any plans to listen to the workers who were pleading for enough money to afford to live.

The Teamsters 320 make a minimum wage of $20 per hour, and all on-campus jobs have a $15 minimum wage after last spring’s Fight For Fifteen. Correct me if I’m wrong, which I’m not :], that’s more than enough money to afford basic living expenses…

You’re missing my point completely, Goldylover09. It’s the fact that the workers had to fight to achieve those wages, despite Gabel getting her salary and a guarantee of secure employment for the next three years or so handed to her on a golden platter.

Well now that they did increase wages, people can stop complaining about it. Yourself included. r/ungratefulpeople

Prices in the Twin Cities grew 6.9% higher from 2020 to 2021 alone. Look at the cost of produce in the Dinkytown Target and tell me that $15 is enough to live.

That statistic is unique because it’s affected by the pandemic. Costs don’t rise that much normally.

The cost of living continues to increase, as does inflation. Why is the price tag going up on everything except our labor?

r/BidenRegret. Also, faculty gets paid way more than they need anyways, and campus workers probably get enough benefits, so I don’t see the issue. Nobody needs to make more than $20 an hour, that’s too much.

By the time her contract finishes in 2026, Joann will have earned about 1.1 million dollars. You wanna tell me again how much is too much for one person to make?

It’s an unfathomable amount of money that nobody should be making, especially when the people that are on the ground doing the real work had to threaten to strike just to get wages that keep up with the cost of living. We’re all struggling out here, and we’re at a point where capitalism is showcasing its unsustainability as well as its inherent inequality and injustice, with this being only one such example. We’re closer to being homeless than we are to being millionaires, so defending one seems a bit ridiculous to me.

I guess you’re right about that. The prices are going up on everything: groceries, rent, even our school’s tuition.

The price tag is going up on everything but our labor. It’s a really great time to question why that is.
