Freaky Just Got Fabulous at Como Backdoor

Carina Dieringer

Following a killer music lineup, more than one hundred Twin Cities locals showed up to DIY venue Como Backdoor for a Monster High themed rave—and the result was spooky, fabulous, and full of energy.

Fluorescent posters featuring familiar Monster High characters and symbols decorated the walls, glowing in the colorful disco lights. Vendors sold bone jewelry and attendees eagerly lined up to have their tarots read. The dress code was “dress your Monster High best,” and no one failed to meet expectations. Some showed up dressed as specific Monster High characters, while others stunned in neon “Y2K” outfits. This term, while often used by modern teens to characterize brightly colored fishnets and fluffy leg warmers, is more true to the style of early 2010s scene ravers.

The dance floor was full of energy and excitement. Whether they were doing traditional rave dances, twerking, or even pulling out the hardcore two step, everyone let the music guide their bodies. This is something rave culture continuously gets right—no one cares what anyone else thinks—it’s all about the music and how it makes you feel.

As is always the case with Como Backdoor, community and respect were strong elements throughout the night. Those who came alone left with friends, those who came with friends found even more, and strangers danced and laughed together without a second thought. The Backdoor isn’t a place where you hang out in a corner, unsure of yourself and where you belong. Everyone is welcome: from the freaks to the fabulous (and everyone in between).

There is something to be said about the perceived loss of teen party culture in recent years. Yes, modern teenagers often spend more time doom scrolling on social media than engaging in the community around them, but in reality you just need to know where to look to see that teens will never give up on dancing and partying with their friends into the long hours of the night. In the words of the Monster High Fright Song:

Don’t be shy—the party never dies.
