Steve Lacy Concert Review

TREVOR DUNNING

Steve Lacy opened the “Oh Yeah?” tour in Minneapolis, performing for the first time in two years—and it’s hard to say when the next time he’ll tour is. After waiting for ticket prices to decrease, at least slightly, I bought my ticket two days before. I was excited.

I walked inside, got my ticket scanned, decided against getting a vodka-cran because I was not gonna pay $14, and then stood and waited in the pit for an hour. Eventually, when Lacy took the stage 30 minutes late, the crowd rushed forward. That’s when this experience stopped being enjoyable.

When I say there was no space, there was quite literally no space. When I say everyone around me had their phones in the air, I mean everyone had their phones in the air. When I say the high-school-aged couple next to me stood in each other’s arms for the entire concert swaying back and forth, knocking into me and presumably the person on their right, I really do mean it.

I should have expected the audience to be pretty terrible considering how Lacy’s last tour went, but they were so bad. If I am at a concert, I’m there to sing, listen, and dance. There was no room to do any of this. Why are we having shouting contests at the Steve Lacy Concert? Why is your flashlight on at the Steve Lacy Concert? Why are you trying to have a conversation with your friend while the headliner, the only person performing tonight and the person you paid for, is currently performing?

Besides that, Lacy’s performance was a bit lackluster and not polished. Granted, it was the first night of the tour so that’s fine. Anyway, I’d have more to say but not for right now.
