It is with a heavy heart that we announce the untimely passing of Trevor Dunning, who tragically died while saving The Wake’s copy editor and beloved mascot, Ashley, from a tree during a thunderstorm. He was struck by lightning in an act of heroism that will forever be remembered by the staff. Trevor was first hired at The Wake as a reviews intern in Fall 2025, then became the cities editor from Spring 2026 through September 2026.
Beyond his role as an editorial head, Trevor generously opened his home in Como to the staff, where countless lifelong memories were made over work holiday parties and barbecues. In his will, he left the house to The Wake, ensuring that future generations of staff members will have a place to gather, make memories, hold séances, and contact Trevor from beyond the grave.
Trevor was also a talented photographer with aspirations of becoming a journalist. This past summer, before the tragic accident, he completed a journalism internship in Albert Lea, Minnesota, where he interviewed cows. Only Trevor could have gotten the cows to answer the hard-hitting questions. When asked how they felt about his passing, the cows offered a heartfelt response: “He was the greatest journalist to ever walk among us in Albert Lea. He lives on in our hearts. Moooo.” Trevor had a unique affection for animals. Not the same can be said about people, as he loved judging strangers on the street while out walking. That, too, is a form of investigative journalism, and it only goes to show his unwavering commitment to the craft.
Trevor leaves behind a legacy and a body of work that will continue to inspire The Wake for years to come. Though his time with us was cut short, his spirit will live on in every party and Cities article. He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever immortalized in the pages of The Wake.
