Nobody Wants This

Like most people, I am very easily swayed by TikTok. The latest thing I was influenced to watch was “Nobody Wants This,” a new Netflix original show starring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody. Because I am an avid rom-com enthusiast—and because I’ll take any opportunity to avoid my homework—I convinced my roommates to spend a Sunday night binging the show with me. While the show is relatively short with only 10 episodes each ranging from 21 to 30 minutes long, I’d argue it was too long to tell the story it aimed to. The plot follows Kristen Bell’s character Joanne, a sex and dating podcaster, who meets and falls in love with Adam Brody’s character Noah, a rabbi who’s been recently separated from his long-term girlfriend. Although the plot was cute and entertaining, it is Adam Brody who steals the show with his cute looks and charming wit. Seriously, they made his character the perfect boyfriend.
While I enjoyed the chemistry between Bell and Brody, as well as the romantic moments and the portrayal of many trials and tribulations that come with new relationships, I think this would’ve worked better as a movie. The pacing for this show was awkward, to say the least. There seemed to be a lot of empty space the writers tried to fill with silly side plots that, while entertaining, barely advanced the main story. Furthermore, the first season ended with a major conflict unresolved, one that I don’t know how they’ll address in the next season. That being said, this show is brief and fun to watch, and I’d recommend it to anyone who likes romantic comedies.
