Double Infinity

Big Thief

Sylvia Wessberg

Double Infinity, the sixth studio album from folk rock band Big Thief, showcases a version of the band we haven't seen before. After parting ways with their bass player last year, they had to find a new balance in collaboration between the remaining three members. Their past albums have been jagged and deeply vulnerable, and while that raw emotion of Big Thief is what they are best at, I loved hearing this shimmering, uplifting, adaption of the band.

The album is an honest celebration of love, written by lead singer and songwriter Adrianne Lenker who is a lyricist on divine levels. She is a master at intertwining honesty and intimacy in her words, never avoiding the painful or the ugly even when expressing something as pure as all consuming love.

The title track, “Double Infinity,” is everything I could hope for from a Big Thief love song. Lenker sings over a hum and soft drums, expressing the duality of love in both its infinite beauty and fears. The following track, “No Fear,” is a hypnotic repetition for nearly seven minutes. “There is no fear, mind so clear, mind so free,” echoes like an affirmation you tell yourself until you believe it's true.
Big Thief is my tried and true for songs with a gut punch of emotion. While this album may not have the raw rock or spontaneous feeling that is so special about their past work, the honesty in the lyrics and imagery still shines through.
