Weather
Jeena
Vanessa Huang
Following her sold-out headlining performance in Los Angeles, indie-rock artist Jeena released her single “Weather” this September. You might recognize her from “Girls on Fire,” a K-Pop girl group survival show; though this song is in English, not Korean.
“Weather” builds a musical story like no other. When Jeena sings in the opening verse, “It was a Venus // I was a fly,” you’re left questioning what this “it” she’s referring to is. The rest of the song ultimately answers this question: “it” is the toxic relationship that she’s trapped in but doesn’t seem to have the determination to leave. Rather, she’s determined to see this relationship through to the end, singing “I’ll lie if it takes me to lose me to see you again.” It’s clear that she’s completely aware of how harmful this relationship is, but she’s desperate to cling on despite it. Who can’t relate to this sentiment? Whether it’s our family, friends, or significant other, we’ve all had that one relationship we couldn’t bring ourselves to break, even for our own wellbeing.
Guys, this song is seriously addicting. I’m not ashamed to admit that my Airbuds app logged 63 listens to “Weather” in just one week. It’s pretty hard to get bored of this song; the chorus and each verse sound distinctly different. It’s really the kind of music that you can listen to on the way to class but also sing-scream in the shower. Give this song a try as we enter autumn and the “weather” gets colder!
