The BakKery

CupcakKe’s newest release, “The BakKery,” came as a surprise to me, as I was not tapped into her work. Upon listening to it, I was immediately struck by the varied and creative beats employed throughout the project. Some songs have an EDM, almost techno-like backing to them, others a more throwback 90s-Y2k style, and some outright unique choices in instrumentation, such as the flute and drum combination on “Soccer Mom.”

I found the rapping to be impressive as well, her chops backing up the bombastic first track, “The Silverback Wife.” In this song she demands respect, notoriety, and to be taken seriously for her craft. Unfortunately, the content of her lyricism consisted of (largely) the same tired and played-out bit she’s been doing for the past decade: graphically and gratuitously sexual bars, to an unserious degree. One does have to wonder, with such an ear for music and such obvious skill and talent, and a clear desire to be taken more seriously, why not be more serious? Perhaps it’s just not for me, and this I can concede; however, as someone who can appreciate, for example, the occasional Sexyy Red song, I have to wonder where the disconnect lies.

Again, cupcakKe’s raw talent cannot be understated. She demonstrates it through her varied and fitting flows and creative instrumentals. I simply find myself being a bit disappointed in the content because of these facts. Overall, a competent album; if you like this sort of thing, you might get something more out of it.
