Letter from a Copy Editor
Dear Esteemed Readers of Wake Magazine,
As we begin the final issue of my three years here at the Wake Magazine, I find myself brimming with emotions—gratitude, nostalgia, and perhaps a hint of melancholy. It has been a remarkable journey. Though my name may remain a mystery to many of you, know that your unwavering support and silent admiration have not gone unnoticed. I need to pee while writing this so let’s keep this short.
Reflecting on my time at The Wake Magazine, I am filled with a profound sense of pride and privilege. The privilege of working alongside a team of dedicated individuals who share a passion, the pride of witnessing the magazine evolve and continue to grow into perspectives that it is today. To my dear Wake staff, you have been more than colleagues; you have been my confidants, my partners in cre - ativity, and most importantly my friends. Thank you for indulging my dry sense of humor, for enduring my endless supply of Zoom jokes, and for embracing my unconventional methods with open arms. Especially all of my managers for rarely seeing me in person. It is you all that have made this experi - ence truly unforgettable.
But before I bid adieu, allow me to share with you the final chapter of Vern lore—a glimpse into the enigmatic figure behind the copy editor’s desk. Yes, it’s true—I am bound for Berkeley for my masters in Public Policy. I had worked for Senator Klobuchar during our fall together. I once got to participate in a farm camp, which is why I am really good at milking cows. I also know how to tap dance and used to be a professional lighting designer for theatrical productions. And let us not forget my expe - rience in the world of combat sports, where I earned accolades as an award-winning fencer, martial artist, archer, and riflewoman. And for those who dare to ask, yes, I possess the rather peculiar talent of opening soda cans with naught but my teeth—a skill acquired through necessity rather than desire.
As I bid you farewell, I do so with a heart full of gratitude and a head full of memories. So here’s to new beginnings, to new adventures, and to the endless possibilities that lie ahead. Until we meet again, dear readers, may your pens be ever sharp and your imaginations boundless. And always thank your editors.
With warm regards and fond farewells,
The VERN
