Joys of Promptober

Drawing every day actually helps, who would have thought?

This October I joined my first “Promptober” in the art community. Promptober originally comes from “Inktober,” when an artist created a list of 31 prompts for others to join in and draw (with pen/ink) every day for a month, creating fun and unique art submissions. However, in recent years the creator of Inktober has gotten into some controversies, causing many to move away from Inktober and join smaller creator Promptobers. These usually follow a specific theme ranging from bands to gore to shows. Creators make a list of different themed prompts and ask followers to join and submit their own artworks for each prompt.

Promptobers are fun, low-commitment ways to interact with others in the art community and get traction on art accounts. Most creators share submissions on their pages, helping out smaller artists. For most Promptobers you don’t need to submit an artwork every day or have completed works; this makes them very flexible and easy to join. The whole point of Promptober is to have fun and challenge yourself, interpret daily prompts, create unique works of art, and get consistent practice.

This time around it was my first time joining, and I ended up joining two different Promptobers! I have participated nearly every day, trying to balance schoolwork and art. So far it has been an incredibly fun experience. I have challenged myself to draw new things that I might’ve been too intimidated to try before. I’ve also been able to interact with many other members of the art community as we all share each other’s work. I hope to continue participating for the rest of October and possibly join again next year! If you’re in the art community, I would highly recommend joining.
