Letter from the Creative Director

Dear Readers,

As I enter my 3rd year here at the wake, and my 2nd year as Creative Director, I come to you with nothing but gratitude. Without you, the reader, there would be no magazine. As I walk around campus and see The Wake in peoples hands, or shoved into backpacks, or handed out to friends, my little heart swells.

To every person that has enjoyed my one pagers, or read my hyper-fixation rants, or collaged with any art I have put in, thank you. There is nothing better then having an outlet for my art and design, and getting to put it out into the world where people will pick it up and see it is something I am so honored to be able to do. Every magazine issue (even the ones I stayed up until 1 am to finish) have been so much fun to complete and see out in print around campus.

Creating something like The Wake can be a very humbling experience (especially when I only noticed errors after the issue was already off to the printer). At the beginning there were so many learning curves around the programs, the style guide, the layout, the printing, and as I have gotten a handle on those, new ways to learn and grow have popped up. I sold my art for the first time in my life. I put personal writing in a place for others to read. I used my platform to push for liberation and justice in my designs and artwork. I am very grateful to have this place to sit in this place of growth and at some points uncomfortableness, and I appreciate y’all letting me make those mistakes and learn from them.

I have loved become a member of The Wake, being able to see people I came in with grow into executives and full time staff has been incredible. We have grown The Wake into some uniquely ourselves, getting to put our own touch on this legendary magazine. I am so grateful I have the wonderful supportive team I do, as we get to use our voice to call out the things we find important, and share our opinions on everything from Divestment to Lime scooters.

I hope you all have loved this magazine as much as I do, and continue to love it as others continue to push it in new directions.

With all my love and gratitude,

Zoë Meyer
