A Good Girl's Guide to Murder

As this past summer came to a close, having my brain fried from summer classes and bones aching from never-ending shifts at work, I found myself feeling robbed of the care-free vibe that summer seems to always promise. Hangouts never made it out of the group chat, trips never got to the planning stage, and, most of all, I couldn’t remember a series or film I had watched that became my entire personality. Suffice to say, my summer was bleak, but the release of the novel-based television series “A Good Girl's Guide to Murder” truly saved my soul from further despair.

The six-part series is based on the young adult mystery novel by Holly Jackson. Our main lead Pippa, played by the beloved “Wednesday” actress Emma Myers, tasks herself with reopening the case of Andie Bell whom was murdered five years ago. Andie Bell’s boyfriend, Sal Singh, confesses to her murder and subsequently committs suicide—however, Pip believes that there is more to the story. This series truly reawakened the thrill and excitement I have for plot-twists and mysteries. The dialogue was smooth, the characters were given complexity and depth, and the audience was kept on their toes deliciously for a majority of the time. More than anything, I loved how the series encapsulated how easily the truth can be distorted to the benefit of those in power.
